We “love” PBL!

or, Project Based Learning!  Particle Pete has inspired us to choose insects to research!  We chose our insects, met in small groups to read and share out our discoveries, and we decided how to represent our knowledge.  Some children chose to illustrate and label a diagram, some made a poster, one child chose to measure and illustrate a life size praying mantis!  Liza told us that there is a ” very huge spider the size of our rocking chair!”  We shivered at that news! Have a look at our representations!   We are amazing Entomologists!  I think that Particle Pete would be proud of us!

What is your favourite insect?

“Mathing”

Great Math Games

Today we used dominoes to count and add together.  We discussed the strategies that we are learning to use when we solve addition equations. Some students suggested that we can “add on” from a known number.  Another student suggested that we could double the number and subtract one (4+3=7…”Double the 4, you get 8.  But, you’re working with a three so take one off!”)  Others suggested that we could count each dot on the domino.  All great suggestions!  Watch us learn to apply these strategies as we explore numbers!

Check out the above site with your child.  There are many exciting math games to enhance student learning!

A Poppy is to Remember

A Poppy is to Remember

This morning we read  and discussed the text, A Poppy is to Remember- Heather Patterson.  We discussed that the poppy is a symbol to honor brave soldiers, a symbol of peace, love, and hope for a gentler, kinder world.  A poppy is to remember those who sacrificed for our freedom. We discussed why we wear the poppy above our hearts. The children shared their own “connections” to the topic.  We learned that several children had grandfathers,  and great grandfathers who served in wars throughout the world.  We discovered that some fathers have served in the military. The children illustrated their connections to the text.  We were impressed with the details that the children added to their illustrations.

Illustrations have been added to the slideshow.  Writing “samples” will follow.

We love Pete the Cat!

Live Storytelling by Pete the Cat Author

Our inspirational student teacher read the delightful tale, Pete the Cat– Eric Litwin, illustrated by- James Dean!

“I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes,

  I love my white shoes,…”

Pete the Cat keeps stepping into “stuff!” Does this upset, Pete?  Oh no!  Not our positive thinking, always optimistic Pete the Cat!  Pete  the Cat is a delightful tale that reminds young and old that,

“No matter what you step in, keep walking along and singing your own song because it’s all good.”

"I love my white shoes!"

Wise words!
