The Kissing Hand – Audrey Pen (You Tube)

Young children can feel some angst (Moms and Dads, too!)  when saying, “Good bye” at the classroom door.  This endearing story discusses  those feelings and offers a way to cope with them.

Chester is a young raccoon who is nervous about going to school. His mother kisses his palm and tells him that “whenever you feel lonely and need a little loving from home, just press your hand to your cheek and think, ‘Mommy loves you. Mommy loves you.”Chester is comforted and goes to school. – Wikipedia Commons

Read the story and discuss it with your students.  “I’m wondering …do you ever feel this way?  Do you have a “good bye” ritual?…”

Give each student a paper folded in half.  Model how to trace their hand onto the paper.  The “pinky” finger side will be on the fold line.  Cut out, watch the fold—don’t cut it.  Open the  hand and print,

* loves you!

* child’s name

Draw a heart onto the “palm.”  Colour the heart.  Decorate the front of the hand- i.e.: add a ring/s!  Give it to your loved one!
