Radiating Shape Patterns

We have been studying Geometry and can name the basic shapes as well as the “solids.”  As an “extra,” the children were challenged to create a radiating pattern using pattern blocks.  View our amazing radiating patterns!

Roll the die!

The children had fun playing the “Doubles” game this morning!  I have sent home a copy of the game for you to play with your child.  Get 20 counters, 10 each.  Lay them on the gameboard squares (You could use Cheerios or pennies as “counters.”).  Roll the die!  Double the amount on the die (ie: If you roll a 5, double it to make 10.)!  Remove a counter from the 10 square on the gameboard.  This is a fun filled way to practice “doubling”  numerals to 5!

Ten Frames

This morning our Math lesson focused on the use of ten frames.  We use ten frames to quickly determine, “How many?” and to add amounts together.  The children worked on adding numbers to 19, using the ten frame format.  They were amazing mathematicians!  I sent the activity home for you to view.  I am sure that you will be impressed with your child’s knowledge!  Amazing “adding on,” children!

“Mathing”

Great Math Games

Today we used dominoes to count and add together.  We discussed the strategies that we are learning to use when we solve addition equations. Some students suggested that we can “add on” from a known number.  Another student suggested that we could double the number and subtract one (4+3=7…”Double the 4, you get 8.  But, you’re working with a three so take one off!”)  Others suggested that we could count each dot on the domino.  All great suggestions!  Watch us learn to apply these strategies as we explore numbers!

Check out the above site with your child.  There are many exciting math games to enhance student learning!

“Related” Facts

Today the children practiced building and discussing “related” addition facts.  Here are some of the addition facts that we made,

2+1 ,1+2,         4+1 ,1+4,      3+7, 7+3

We learned that “related” facts are like family. You can move them around but they always like to come back home!

Hallowe’en Centres

We had a wonderful morning!  The children participated in the exciting

Shake, Rattle, and Roll those dice!

centre activities planned by the PAC and the teachers.  From skeleton dice roll to encourage mathematical thinking to the Pumpkin Games in the gym, we all had so much fun!  In the afternoon we paraded, in costume, around the school!  It was a glorious Autumn day and we got to show off our costumes and wave to our friends.  The treats provided by the teachers and parents were delicious!  Thank you to everyone who helped to make this day a magical one for all to enjoy!
